Those were the times of war and initially a fort was established in this city which was named as Alcazar. The location of the fort was chosen near the stream. The name of the city was derived from that as Madrid is an Arabic word for stream or source of water. Madrid was captured by Christians in 1085. Madrid remained a small town till the sixteenth century. It was Philip II who firstly made Madrid his capital in 1561. The town converted into a city afterwards and its population started growing very fast. Madrid remained an important city of the world since that time. Some important buildings in the city were built in that era and similarly the city progressed in all aspects irrespective of bad times of Spain in subsequent wars. There are notable building built in the city in recent centuries. The City Hall was established in the city in the seventeenth century. Plaza Mayor was established between 1590 and 1790. Royal Palace was

 built in 1764 at the place of Moorish Fort which was destroyed in the same century. There are lots of influences of various eras of Spain on the city today. Most of the city progressed in the recent century. Some of the modern buildings in the city are Torres Kio, Terminal 4 of Barajas Airport in Madrid.
